4. Can a microlight pilot fly wherever they like?
Like all flying machines, a microlight is subject to the “Rules of the Air”.
It is also limited to what is called "daytime Visual Flight". This means it can only fly by day (from 30' before sunrise to 30' after sunset), clear of cloud, with a minimum visibility set by the regulations. The pilot must always have sight of the ground.
* It can fly freely in all airspace known as "uncontrolled airspace", where there are no specific restrictions set by the Air Navigation Services.
* Other airspace, known as 'controlled airspace', requires permission to enter. This is the case, for example, of airspace around or near aerodromes, airspace used by airliners, certain military zones...
* Finally, there are areas that may not be entered, temporarily or permanently (some military zones, or nuclear power stations, for example).
All this information is shown on the aeronautical charts that pilots must have on board when they go away from their home base.
