Medical

The essentials

  • First licence, or a break of at least one year: a medical certificate of no contraindication (CMNCI) less than a year old, issued by any practising doctor in the European Community or Switzerland.
  • Class 1, Class 2 or LAPL aeronautical certificates replace the CMNCI if their expiry date covers the current calendar year.
  • Renewal: no certificate each time, but the "QS-Sport" health questionnaire (cerfa 15699), which does not have to be returned to the federation.
  • Competition: annual certificate bearing the words "in competition".

Depending on your situation

Which certificate, and when?

First licence

First application, or licence lapsed for at least a year

When you first apply for a licence, or if your federation licence has lapsed for at least a year, you must hold a medical certificate of no contraindication less than a year old, certifying that there is no contraindication to flying microlights.

This is in no way an aeronautical medical examination, and any practising medical doctor in the European Community or Switzerland, in particular your family doctor, is entitled to issue this certificate.

  1. Online application

Within eight days, send the original of the certificate, less than a year old at the date of entry, to FFPLUM head office.

  2. Application by post

Enclose the certificate with your licence application.

Renewal

"Leisure" licences are renewed at the start of each year

There is no need to send a medical certificate at each renewal.

When a medical certificate is not required, the pilot or their legal representative (if a minor) must complete a health questionnaire called "QS — SPORT" (or cerfa 15699). This questionnaire does not have to be sent to the FFPLUM.

If the pilot has answered "Yes" to one or more questions, it is their responsibility to ask their doctor for a new medical certificate and send it to the FFPLUM.

Aeroplane pilot

You already have an aeronautical medical certificate

Class 1, Class 2 or LAPL aeronautical medical certificates issued in the European Community replace the CMNCI provided that their expiry date covers the current calendar year.

For a first licence applied for online, general aviation pilots send, within eight days, a copy of their valid aeronautical medical certificate.

Competition

An annual certificate, with the words "in competition"

To take part in a competition, a microlight CMNCI stating "in competition" must be issued and must be less than a year old on the date the planned competition ends.

Derogation

An exemption, after advice from the Medical Committee

Some contraindications may also be the subject of exemptions after advice from the Medical Committee. In that case, send the file by post to the Medical Committee at the Federation's address, marked "medical confidentiality".

For certain disabilities, the Medical Committee can work with the Adapted Flying Committee to find solutions in some cases. Send by post:

  • Your doctor's statement of the disability
  • The related examinations
  • The exemption request

Paying passengers

Order of 17 February 2025: pilots who carry fare-paying passengers

As regards the medical side, a simple medical certificate of no contraindication signed by a general practitioner will be required for pilots flying for remuneration with passengers from the age of 40 for VLO and 60 for VLD.

The federation's OPS kit includes a model medical certificate, to be given to your doctor for the pilots concerned.

Practical information on regulations and health matters

Issuing the Medical Certificate of No Contraindication to Microlight Flying (CMNCI)

When you first apply for a licence or if your federation licence has lapsed for at least a year, you must hold a medical certificate of no contraindication less than a year old certifying that there is no contraindication to flying microlights. This is in no way an aeronautical medical examination, and any practising medical doctor in the European Community or Switzerland, in particular your family doctor, is entitled to issue this certificate.

Class 1, Class 2 or LAPL aeronautical medical certificates issued in the European Community replace the CMNCI provided that their expiry date covers the current calendar year.

If you apply online for a first federation licence, for your membership to be validated you must send the following to the FFPLUM head office within eight days:

  • either the original of the medical certificate of no contraindication, less than a year old at the date of entry,
  • or, for general aviation pilots, a copy of their valid aeronautical medical certificate.

For a postal application, simply enclose one of these documents with your licence application.

Licence renewal

"Leisure" licences are renewed at the start of each year. However, there is no need to send a medical certificate at each renewal.

To take part in a competition, a microlight CMNCI stating "in competition" must be issued and must be less than a year old on the date the planned competition ends.

Competition

For taking part in competitions, the medical certificate is annual and must state "in competition"
