Theory, practice, first solo, certificate: how to learn to fly a microlight, and how to train a regular passenger in emergency procedures.
Become a pilot
Training for the microlight pilot certificate combines a theory course common to all six classes and practical training specific to the target class, at one of the 724 affiliated clubs and schools.
Stage 01
The common microlight pilot theory certificate is issued by the civil aviation authority after a multiple-choice exam of 60 questions. It covers regulations, meteorology, aerodynamics, aircraft knowledge, navigation and human factors. It is common to all six classes: you only take it once, whatever machine you go on to fly.
Registration is on the examulm.ffplum.fr platform, and the tests take place at the federation's exam centres.
Stage 02
It is done with a registered instructor, in the chosen class. Its length depends on the class, the student's pace and the weather: there is no regulatory minimum number of hours, but a standard to reach.
Stage 03
During practical training, the student makes several solo flights under the supervision of their instructor. The first of these, the first solo, marks the progress from the first flight to the certificate.
Stage 04
You must hold the certificate whenever you fly as pilot in command. It is valid for life.
And after the certificate
The certificate is not the end. Carrying passengers, adding a class, radio rating, mountain flying or seaplane flying, returning to flying after a break: training goes on throughout a pilot's life, and the federation runs courses in the regions every year.

Youth pathway
The Youth Pathway supports under-25s in ab initio training, under a partnership between FFPLUM and the affiliated club or school. Training must be delivered by an FFPLUM-licensed instructor. Activated on 1 December 2025.
Does not apply to an aeroplane-to-microlight conversion or to training for a new class.
Aid paid at each stage completed
That is €550 over the full pathway, and €700 with the BIA.
