"Mon espace ULM" is an online service developed by the Directorate General for Civil Aviation (DGAC), enabling users to carry out administrative procedures relating to microlights over the internet.

Procedures for private individuals

Microlight owners and users will find in the "ULM - Procedures for private individuals" sheet the information they need for the procedures that concern them, in particular:

  • obtaining and keeping valid the identification card and the aircraft station licence (LSA)
  • declaring a major modification and obtaining a provisional identification card to carry out the necessary tests
  • the procedure for transferring a microlight

All the information a private individual needs to obtain, transfer, identify, obtain a station licence for, or declare a modification to a microlight.

My microlight area

General

A microlight may be used for air traffic only if it carries:

  • a valid identification card, or
  • a valid provisional identification card.

The identification card states the microlight's identification marks, which consist of the number of the département of the microlight's home base followed by two or three letters.

In the case of a provisional card, the identification marks are preceded by the letter W (however, for class 1 and 5 microlights and sub-classes 2A and 3A, applying the letter W of the provisional marks is optional).

These marks must be applied under the wing, or on the structure if that is not possible, and must be plain, at least fifty centimetres high and easily legible.

They remain valid indefinitely, even if the owner moves to another département.

Useful information for the identification procedure

  • Weighing the microlight: to obtain the empty mass, weighing is carried out with no occupant or load (baggage, removable ballast, etc.), with no fuel apart from unusable fuel, but with fixed ballast and the maximum quantities of fluids needed for the normal operation of the microlight (e.g. oil, coolant, hydraulic fluid)
  • Home base: this is the place where the microlight is normally kept. However, for a class 1 microlight, the home base may be the home address of the holder of the identification card. Under Article 14-1 of the order of 23 September 1998 cited in the references, the authority may ask the holder of the microlight's card to present the aircraft at a suitable airfield so that its safety can be assessed.
  • Validity of the identification card: the identification card is valid for an unlimited period, provided it is accompanied by an acknowledgement of receipt issued less than 24 months ago by the administration on receipt of a declaration from the applicant stating that their microlight is fit to fly.
  • Joint ownership: Several people may own a microlight, but only one representative will be entered on the identification card and will be the contact for the DGAC.
The choice of a single name must be made by all the owners on plain paper signed by all of them.
  • Proof of ownership: Microlight identification cards are flight authorisations issued in the name of an applicant on the strength of their declarations. They are not an individual certificate of airworthiness registration or a permit to fly, the only documents acceptable for registration. There is no legal basis for entering microlights in the registration register and therefore for taking out mortgages on them.
  • Marking: A microlight may not fly unless it carries, under the wing or on the structure if that is not possible, plain identification marks at least fifty centimetres high and easily legible.
  • Holding an aircraft station licence (see below) is compulsory if the microlight is fitted with an on-board radio installation.
