Why and how to get insured?

Why and how to get insured?

Insurance1 December 20205 min read

The French Microlight Federation, an Insurance Intermediary Agent since October 2018, is reinforcing its relations of trust by renewing its partnership with its broker Air Courtage and with Axa XL, a French insurer well known in light aviation. Insurance matters are dealt with as a priority at the Federation's head office, thanks to the creation of a technical insurance team including a salaried post.

INSURANCE COVER OFFERED BY FFPLUM
  • Liability insurance (RC)
This fundamental cover, attached to the pilot (user liability) or to the microlight (aircraft liability), covers damage caused to others. It protects the pilot against claims from all third parties, including the passenger (in flight and on the ground). See the IPID information sheet here.
  • Personal accident (IA) and repatriation assistance for the pilot and/or passenger
This cover pays a death or disability lump sum in the event of an accident connected with flying. Borrower insurance and life insurance policies on the market very often exclude microlighting. See the Personal Accident IPID information sheet here ; for Repatriation Assistance, click here.
  • Damage while parked anywhere
This cover allows owners to insure against physical damage their microlight might suffer while parked on the ground, engine off, anywhere (including fire, theft and vandalism).

New for 2021: stationary run-up liability without taxiing!
If you are an owner and unsure in this particular context, you are not flying and you want to take out your liability cover later in the year, we have developed a specific product that complements parked aircraft liability: the stationary run-up option without taxiing. It covers damage caused to third parties when your microlight is stationary with the engine running (taxiing excluded). For safety reasons, the run-up must be carried out outside any building and at a good distance from any other aircraft.

If you opt for user or aircraft liability during the year, the parked aircraft liability cover and the stationary run-up option without taxiing will be deducted from the amount to be paid!

LEGAL SUPPORT AND PROTECTION INCLUDED IN YOUR FEDERATION LICENCE

As part of federation policy and to protect microlight flying, the Federation offers members and organisations various forms of legal assistance.

  • The Federation listens to your problem and takes it on, through legal information and mediation.
  • Legal support from our partner CFDP, first at the amicable stage and then in court if necessary.
  • Partial or full coverage of expert, lawyer and procedural costs.
  • When the general or particular interest of microlight flying is affected, the FFPLUM Executive Board is asked to launch a consultation (at FFPLUM's expense) and a proposed course of action from the federation lawyer, Maître Conti. The proposed actions are submitted to the Executive Board for partial or full coverage of the case.
AUTOMATIC, FREE COVER FOR AFFILIATED ORGANISATIONS
  • Ground Third-Party Liability
  • Sports Group Third-Party Liability
  • Officers' Third-Party Liability

These cover schemes protect and insure all volunteers, employees and participants, including non-flying ones, who help within the organisations; members of the Executive Board, the Board of Directors, regional and département committees and divisions; contractors working for the Federation; and all pilots and managers of organisations.

THE MOST COMMON CASES

Are you an instructor?
We recommend the Instructor Special User Third-Party Liability as well as Pilot Personal Accident cover and Passenger Personal Accident cover. For paramotor-only instructors, a Paramotor-only Instructor Special User Third-Party Liability has been created.

Are you a student?
You are covered by your instructor's Instructor Special User Third-Party Liability; we recommend Pilot Personal Accident cover.

Are you a student aircraft owner?
You are covered by your instructor's special Instructor User Liability, and we recommend Parked Aircraft Liability and Pilot Personal Accident cover. When your certificate date is near, or once you are qualified, you should opt for Single-seat User Liability (then Two-seat once you have your passenger-carrying rating). We also offer Ground Damage Cover for your microlight anywhere (excluding paramotors and aerostats).

Are you a pilot?
You are not an owner, and you fly a machine that may otherwise be insured by the club. Ask the club about the insurance it has taken out or what you need to take out individually. We also recommend taking out Pilot Personal Accident (and Passenger Personal Accident if you hold the passenger-carrying rating).

Are you an owner-pilot?
For your liability insurance you can choose between User liability and Aircraft liability; we also recommend a personal accident policy for the pilot and passenger if you hold your passenger-carrying rating. We also offer Breakage cover while parked for your microlight, anywhere (excluding paramotors and aerostats).
If you are not flying or want to take out your liability cover later in the year, we recommend taking out parked aircraft liability + stationary run-up option.

Please note: these are only guidelines covering the most common cases!
