Training Corner - BSV no.48
Questioning ourselves
Questioning ourselves allows us to progress in life.
Anyone who never questions themselves prevents themselves from discovering and understanding themselves.
Yet people need to learn about themselves and others, about their emotions and reactions but also about their mistakes, in order to improve and progress.
REV was set up in this spirit.
When I ask aircraft-owning pilots, almost all of them tell me: the federation's initiative is great, but I don't think it's for me, I fly a lot, you know… True, and yet…
When I ask: how long is it since you last did a supervised exercise, a simulated engine failure on take-off? In most cases the answer is: you're right, but my machine is well maintained.
The pilot of the Baron who landed in Avignon last Saturday with a blown engine, having lost a cylinder in flight, surely thought so too… and with a certified aircraft at that.
We all have a "safety zone": an area in which our experience, combined with our knowledge of our machine and our maintenance of proficiency, allows us to fly safely.
This zone can move in either direction, growing or shrinking, and the pilot remains the main player.
Let us make sure this zone moves in the right direction, but for that you first have to be convinced of it yourself.
REV is above all an incentive, not a constraint; this initiative is welcomed by all players in recreational and professional aviation. Let us work together to make it contribute to improving our safety record.
And don't forget that your instructor will be able to answer all your questions.
