The Manuel du Pilote d’ULM (Cépaduès, 10th edition), on page 321, lists five mental attitudes that can influence the safety level of a flight:
- Anti-authority: don’t tell me what to do! (Authority in relation to a superior, to regulations, etc.).
- Impulsive: quick! something has to be done! (Acting on intuition and without thinking).
- Invulnerable: it can’t happen to me! Someone else would have crashed! (“I am very experienced”).
- Macho: watch me, you’ll be impressed!
- Resigned: anyway, it’s all over! I knew I was unlucky! (Blind adherence to a group’s ways, etc.).
These mental attitudes are not abstract concepts. They appear regularly in our daily activity to varying degrees and influence our social life. The latter remains acceptable because people are generally able to moderate or control them, particularly in group relationships. When they strongly characterise certain personalities, they sometimes contribute to tragedy. Could we spot those illustrated by the report on the 14-NI?

Perfect knowledge of one’s environment……
Below is the lessons-learned account of a pilot who agreed to tell us about a recent material incident (ground collision) that he caused.
A number of lessons can be drawn from it.
Safety in Figures
The table below summarises the accident statistics recorded from 1 January to 31 August 2018, ranking casualties by severity and distinguishing purely material-damage accidents. The second table shows microlight accidents involving French-registered aircraft that took place abroad with foreign crews.
